Position Title:

Research Associate - Psychology

Position Summary:

This is a multi-year, grant funded position by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on topics related to identity development among Black women and the success of STEM education at HBCUs through the collaborative HBCU STEM Undergraduate Success (US) Center. This position entails research collaboration with faculty in implementing studies, analyzing data, managing the Gender, Race, and Cultural Empowerment (GRACE) research lab, among other research duties as they arise.The person in this position will assist with: 1) overseeing data collection from surveys and focus groups, and 2) managing IRB protocols. The incumbent may work on research projects of interest.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
  • Collects and assists with analyzing quantitative and/or qualitative research data (surveys and focus group data).
  • Manages IRB protocols.
  • Supervises undergraduate research assistants.
  • Presents research findings at professional conferences.
  • Assists with ordering and procurement of equipment and with general maintenance of the lab.
  • Performs the research required by the faculty supervisor to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations.
  • Works in a collegial and cooperative manner with the faculty supervisor and other co-workers.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelors degree required, preferably in social or educational psychology, education, or a related field. Must have 1-3 years of prior research experience and leadership experience. Requires high levels of conscientiousness, strong communication, and high motivation to learn.

This position is ideal for a recent bachelors graduate who is interested in strengthening research skills before applying to graduate school. Ideally, the candidate will also be interested in the topics of identity development of Black women, stereotyping, discrimination, and racial and gender diversity in STEM education.

Excellent written and verbal communication, problem-solving, time management, and leadership skills are essential, as is the ability to work within a team. The incumbent must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret findings in academic journals.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) which includes such things as creating forms, using formulas, and very internet savvy. Must possess experience using any of the analyzing datasets (e.g., SPSS, NVivo, Mplus, etc.) Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with (or training in) qualitative and quantitative research is preferred but not required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; and use hands to prepare experiments, handle lab equipment, talk and hear, and to operate computer. The employee is occasionally required to: bend, lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include the ability to adjust focus as necessary.
