Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) play a key role in HDR's matrix management, driving our business in the largest sector, Highway & Roads, which generates nearly $1B annually worldwide. This sector includes highways, toll roads, bridges, and related services such as design, traffic engineering, and planning.

The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas:

  • Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  • Staff development (20%)
  • Support to Operations (10%)

The Director sets the vision for growth, supports strategic initiatives, and maintains communication with leadership to implement plans. They also engage with clients, oversee business development, and represent HDR in industry organizations. Staff development involves managing P&L, recruiting, and supporting technical excellence. Support to operations includes monitoring performance, ensuring quality, and facilitating project delivery.

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Minimum 20 years in highway or bridge planning/engineering
  • Professional engineering license or equivalent
  • Leadership roles in industry associations like AASHTO or IBTTA

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
  • At least 12 years of industry experience with leadership
  • Excellent communication and client management skills
  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking
